A Simple 5 Day Devotional on Anger Management

Here’s a short and simple devo that you can do each day for the next 5 days. It involves a little journaling, so grab your journal or a small notebook to hand-write your answers and thoughts. This will greatly help to launch you into managing your anger. Remember, anger fuels addiction, so you need to get rid of it faster than the day’s garbage.
đź“– Day 1: The Real Root of Anger
“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?”
Scripture: James 4:1–2
Devo
Anger isn’t just a moment of rage. Anger is the result of unmet desires, hidden wounds, or a desire for control. James reminds us that conflict begins in the heart. To manage our anger, we must start with honesty about what’s really going on inside.
Self Reflection
- When was the last time you got angry? What was really behind it?
- What are some things you’re trying to control that belong in God’s hands?
Journal
Write about a recent moment of anger. What emotions were hiding underneath it. Was it fear, rejection, shame, helplessness, lack of control you wanted?
đź“– Day 2: When Anger Goes Unchecked
Scripture: Ephesians 4:26–27
“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”
Devo
Anger that simmers turns into bitterness can become a breeding ground for relapse. God calls us to deal with our anger quickly, because prolonged resentment opens the door for the enemy to work.
Self Reflection
- Who are you still angry with?
- Are there grudges you’re holding on to that God is calling you to release?
Journal
Make a list of anyone you feel resentment toward. Then, write a short prayer over each name, surrendering them to Jesus.
đź“– Day 3: A New Creation with a New Response
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new is here!”
Devo
The world says, “That’s just how I am.” But Jesus says, “You are new.” You are not destined to explode, lash out, or shut down forever. You’ve been given a new heart. With that new heart, you have a new way to respond.
Self Reflection
- Do you still identify with your old self when angry?
- What would a Spirit-led response to anger look like to you?
Journal
Describe your “old” response to anger and your “new” response in Christ. Ask God to help you walk in your new identity today.
đź“– Day 4: The Example of Christ
Scripture: 1 Peter 2:23
“When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.”
Devo
Jesus endured betrayal, abuse, and injustice, yet He didn’t lash out. Why? Because He entrusted His pain to Abba Father. When we surrender our anger to God, we no longer need to retaliate. We trust God to make things right. As we would our earthly dad, we just say, Abba, please fix this because I can’t.
Self Reflection
- Are you holding on to anger because you think it protects you?
- What would trusting God look like to you so that you can let it go?
Journal
Write about a situation where you feel you’ve been wronged. Imagine placing it in God’s hands. What would that look and feel like?
đź“– Day 5: Walking in Freedom, Not Reaction
Scripture: Galatians 5:22–23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…”
Devo
The Holy Spirit doesn’t just help you avoid sin, He equips you with something better. You don’t have to react in anger; you can respond in love, self-control, and peace. This is the fruit of walking with Jesus, one step at a time.
Self Reflection
- What fruits of the Spirit have you seen grow in your life?
- What situations still trigger old habits?
Journal
Pray through each fruit of the Spirit. Ask God which fruit He wants to grow in you most right now when it comes to managing anger.
Have a blessed rest of your day as your anger begins to drain until you realize Jesus will take it away when you give it to Him. Hope to see you next post.
