What’s Stopping you from Ending your Addiction or Resuming Recovery?

If you’ve ever tried to casually walk away from your addiction, then you already know that it’s not usually something you can just walk away from. As bad as it is, you spend mostly all of your time in it. You might dream of a new life. You might feel the pull of God calling you to second chances and a better life. You’re tired of the pain, the chaos, the nightmares, the overdoses, and the broken dreams. And yet, you find you cannot get away! You are ‘crazy glued’ to it. You’re being held hostage by the enemy of your soul – Satan himself.

For many, the biggest reason is simple, but brutally real: withdrawal. You can’t leave and you don’t want to stay.

Withdrawal is like nothing else. Withdrawal is wicked and evil. The physical pain, the mental torment, the anxiety, the depression, it’s overwhelming. Your body and mind fight you every step of the way, and your mind tells you that it’s just not worth it… it’s just to hard. You think, maybe you’re better off staying where you are, even though where you are is slowly destroying you. It’s a s-l-o-w suicide!

Withdrawal is not the end of your story. You can make it the beginning of your new story… your healing.

Yes, it’s hard. Yes, it can feel unbearable. But you’re not meant to go through it alone. Jesus understands suffering. He endured the cross so that you wouldn’t have to carry your pain by yourself. His Word says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). That promise includes you, even in the grip of withdrawal, even in the darkest night when everything in you screams to go… just one more high… a few more pills … just a few more drinks. I shiver at the memories of those who said that and then they overdosed and died.

If withdrawal isn’t stopping you, then it might also be fear. Fear that you’ll fail again. Shame that you’ve gone too far. Pride. That lying small voice inside saying, “I can do this on my own.” Listen, if you could have done it alone, you wouldn’t even be reading this. God never expected you to fix yourself. He’s asking you to trust Him to do what you can’t. It’s His power that will accomplish this if you submit to Him.

Another lie that may be keeping you stuck is thinking, “I’ll quit tomorrow.” But tomorrow is a dangerous word in recovery. God says, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15). The longer you wait, the deeper the roots of addiction grow, and the more the enemy deepens his foothold. The truth is, healing begins when you stop running from the pain and start facing it… hand in hand with Jesus.

So what’s really stopping you? Is it the fear of withdrawal? The weight of guilt? The comfort of the familiar, even if the familiar is killing you? Whatever it is, bring it into the light. Speak it to God. Lay it at the foot of the cross. Because Jesus didn’t die for a clean version of you. He died for you, as you are, right now. Trust Jesus to do what’s necessary and begin medically supervised detox now. It’s only a few days to 2 weeks for most substances. When you get home, grab yourself a believing Recovery Coach and begin your holy journey home with Jesus… to freedom for a lifetime.

You are never too far gone. In Christ, you are not weak, so you don’t have to wait until you feel strong. You just have to be willing. God will take it from there.

Let now be the day you stop running. Let today be the day you start walking in the healing footsteps of Jesus… no matter how slowly… toward freedom.

2 Corinthians 12:9 says . . . . . . .

And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

Have a blessed rest of your day. I pray that right now, you will make the right decision to be set free.
