Betrayed by the Very Church You Thought Taught the Bible and Trusted?

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel.
— Galatians 1:6
Something tragic has crept into the modern church. It dresses in designer clothes, speaks in lofty spiritual tones, and promises miracles on demand. It’s built on stages, broadcast around the world, and exported to the desperate as hope—but it’s not the gospel. It’s a counterfeit.
The Word of Faith (WoF) and New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) movements have not just added confusion to the Church—they have destroyed lives, disillusioned believers, and dragged many away from the simplicity of the gospel of Christ.
1. A Different Gospel: Promises of Health, Wealth, and Power
The Word of Faith movement teaches that faith is a force you can use to speak things into existence. Sickness, poverty, and struggle are treated not as part of life in a fallen world, but as evidence of spiritual failure or lack of faith.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
— Galatians 1:8
Meanwhile, the NAR claims God is raising up new apostles and prophets with authority equal to—or greater than—Scripture. They preach dominion over the earth, calling believers to conquer seven spheres of society before Christ can return.
But Jesus never said, “Take over the world before I return.” He said, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). He didn’t promise political thrones. He promised a cross.
2. A Church Led by Personal Revelation, Not God’s Word
In both WoF and NAR, the Bible is often sidelined. Leaders speak of “downloads from heaven,” “fresh revelation,” and dreams or visions that supposedly carry divine authority.
But the Bible warns us:
Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.
— Proverbs 30:5–6
When feelings, visions, or prophets take priority over Scripture, we are no longer standing on the solid rock—we are on sinking sand (Matthew 7:24–27).
3. Celebrity Leaders and Manipulative Teachings
Many WOF and NAR leaders live in excess while their followers are told to “sow seeds” of money they don’t have—promised that financial blessings will follow. Paula White is one of them!!!
They teach:
- “If you tithe, God will make you rich.”
- “If you speak it, you’ll have it.”
- “If you aren’t healed, you lack faith.”
These lies leave people broken, ashamed, and doubting God.
In their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle.
— 2 Peter 2:3
Jesus flipped the tables of the money changers—not because people gave, but because they were being robbed in God’s name (Matthew 21:12–13). That same spirit is alive in these movements today.
4. Faith That Fails When Life Gets Hard
When people are told that God always wants them healthy, rich, and successful, what happens when cancer comes? When jobs are lost? When healing doesn’t happen?
Many lose faith—not because God failed, but because they were taught a lie.
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
— 2 Timothy 3:12
The real gospel prepares us for hardship, but promises eternal glory. It doesn’t promise escape from suffering—it offers victory through it.
5. Exporting a False Gospel to the World
These teachings are not only misleading believers in the West—they are being exported globally, especially to the poor and desperate in developing nations. People are told to give their last coin in hopes of a miracle.
Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord.
— Jeremiah 23:1
The prosperity gospel is a spiritual pyramid scheme: those at the top flourish while the rest are left empty and disillusioned.
6. Calling the Church Back to Truth
The Word of Faith and NAR movements thrive where Scripture is ignored. But the Bible is clear: the gospel is about Jesus crucified, not riches multiplied.
For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
— 1 Corinthians 2:2
We must return to:
📖 Sound Doctrine
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
— 2 Timothy 4:3–4
📖 Humble Leadership
Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
— 1 Peter 5:2–3
📖 The Sufficiency of Scripture
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
— 2 Timothy 3:16–17
📖 The True Power of the Gospel
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
— Romans 1:16
Warning and Hope
If you’ve been deceived by these movements—if you’ve been wounded, lied to, or made to feel like a failure because you’re still struggling—Jesus hasn’t rejected you. The false gospel did.
Run back to Him. Return to the cross. Lay down the counterfeit and embrace the real Savior.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
— Matthew 11:28
How to Find a Good Church
If you’re looking for a faithful church after escaping the deception of the Word of Faith, NAR movement, or other, contact them and start with one simple question: Do you preach the Word of God without compromise? A healthy church teaches the whole counsel of God… including prophecy, repentance, holiness, the pre-tribulational rapture, and the return of Christ—without sensationalism or manipulation. You won’t find smoke machines, rock concerts disguised as worship, or an atmosphere designed to entertain rather than convict. Instead, you’ll find reverent worship, Spirit-led preaching, and believers who love the truth more than emotional hype. A biblical church will exalt Christ, not personalities. The focus will be on the cross, not charisma. There may not be flashing lights, but there will be light from the Word. That’s where healing begins, and that’s where the true Church stands.
