“Fire Never Says Enough”

“The leech has two daughters—Give and Give! There are three things that are never satisfied, Four never say, ‘Enough!’: The grave, the barren womb, the earth that is not satisfied with water—And the fire never says, ‘Enough!‘” (Proverbs 30: 15-16)

Fire has one mission: consume.
No matter how much you feed it, it keeps burning. Throw in a stick—it licks it up. Throw in a log—it crackles louder. Fire never stops and never says, “That’s good. I’m full.”

Solomon, in his wisdom, draws our attention to this image not merely to describe nature—but to confront human nature.
Sin works like fire.
So does greed.
Lust.
Pride.
Addiction.
Bitterness.
Even our hunger for attention or approval.
These things consume but are never content. You feed them once, and they want more.
Twice—and they demand it daily.

The world tells us to “follow our hearts” and “chase our desires,” but God’s Word warns us: desire without boundaries is a wildfire.

James 1:14-15 (NKJV)
“But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”

The truth is, only Jesus can satisfy the cravings of the human heart. Everything else leaves you empty, scorched, and still wanting more. But when you surrender your fire to Him, He doesn’t snuff it out—He purifies it.

Ecclesiastes 1:8 (NKJV)
“All things are full of labor; Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing.”

Isaiah 5:14 (NKJV)
“Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself And opened its mouth beyond measure; Their glory and their multitude and their pomp, And he who is jubilant, shall descend into it.”

John 4:13-14 (NKJV)
“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.'”

Psalm 107:9 (NKJV)
“For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness.”

1 Timothy 6:6 (NKJV)
“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”

📚 Word Study Highlights

  • “Enough” (Hebrew: הוֹן / hon): Suggests sufficiency, fulfillment, contentment. Fire, symbolic of unchecked desire, never reaches this place.
  • “Leech” (Hebrew: עֲלוּקָה / ‘aluqah): A creature symbolic of relentless greed. In the proverb, it’s personified with two daughters—“Give” and “Give”—a poetic way to emphasize endless craving.

🙏 Prayer

Abba Father, I acknowledge that there are things in me that are never satisfied. I’ve tried to fill them with everything but You, and I’m still empty. Please forgive me for feeding the fire with my own sin. Purify my desires. Quench my thirst with Your living water. Help me walk in contentment, satisfied in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
