How Can I Be Sure That God Loves Me?

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
John 15:13
When you’re struggling with addiction, it can feel impossible to believe that God truly loves you. The weight of shame, guilt, and repeated failures can create a deep valley between you and your faith. But there’s a profound truth that has sustained countless others on the recovery journey: God’s love is available to all who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, and His shed blood. “Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin.”
John 3:16 puts it clearly: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This is the foundation of God’s love – His shed blood that flows through our relationship with Him. When we understand what Jesus did on the cross, we open the door to experiencing the fullness of God’s love.
Think about it this way: God’s love isn’t just a feeling or a concept – it’s a person. Jesus Christ is the embodiment of God’s love for humanity. Through His shed blood and death on the cross and resurrection, Jesus made it possible for us to have a relationship with God, our Father. This is how we receive God’s love: by simply believing this incredible gift of salvation through faith in Christ.
For those in recovery, this truth is transformational. Your addiction does not diminish God’s desire for you to come to Him through Christ. In fact, Jesus himself said, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32). When you accept Christ, you receive forgiveness and a new identity as God’s son or daughter.
Here are concrete ways to anchor yourself in this truth during recovery:
- Begin your recovery journey by ensuring your foundation is in Christ. If you haven’t already, believe that Jesus shed his blood for you as an atonement for your sins. This is the essential first step to experiencing God’s love fully.
- Start each morning reading scriptures about God’s love and salvation through Christ. Write them down. Carry them with you. Let them be your shield when shame tries to convince you otherwise.
- Practice radical honesty in prayer through Jesus, your mediator. As Hebrews 4:16 tells us, we can “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence” through Christ because he shed His blood for us at the cross. He died and arose on the third day where He is now preparing a home for us, His people, in Heaven.
- Connect with other believers in recovery who can remind you of God’s love and the truth of the atoning blood of Jesus which brought us our salvation. Sometimes we need to stay close to faith from others until our own grows stronger.
Here’s what you must believe to be saved. It’s all about the blood of Jesus, not some ridiculous mand made ‘ABC’ prayer or ‘receiving’ Jesus! Let’s be clear, it’s all about believing in the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:25-26 says,
“God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— He did it to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”
1 Corinthians 15:1-4
“Now I make known to you, brothers, the gospel which I proclaimed as good news to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I proclaimed to you as good news, unless you believed for nothing.”
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”
Hebrews 10:19-22
“Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”
Remember this: Your recovery journey isn’t about earning God’s love – it’s about accepting the blood He shed because of His love for you and learning to live in that truth. As Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
When you feel most unlovable, remember that Christ died for you in exactly that state. When shame whispers that you’re too far gone, remember that Jesus shed His blood specifically for the lost. When addiction tries to define you, remember your true identity in Christ as a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Your recovery isn’t just about getting sober – it’s about discovering the depth and breadth of God’s love made available through faith in the blood that Jesus Christ shed for us. This love was purchased at the highest price – the life of God’s own Son – and is freely given to all who believe in what He did.
Take a moment right now. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply. Let this truth sink into your soul: God loves you so much that He sent His Son to die for you by shedding His precious blood on the cross. Through faith in Christ’s shed blood, you can receive this love fully. Not the future, cleaned-up version of you. Not the past, less-broken version of you. He offers His love to you right now, exactly as you are, when you come to Him through Jesus’ shed blood.
This is the foundation of your recovery – not your willpower, not your determination, but the unshakeable, unchangeable love of God and His shed blood, accessed through faith in how Christ gave His life for you. Stand on this truth. Build your recovery on it. Let it be the first thing you remember in the morning and the last thing you think about at night.
Remember: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). Through faith in Jesus, you can know with certainty that you are loved. Completely. Unconditionally. Eternally. This is the good news that transforms both recovery and life itself.
Have a blessed rest of your day. I pray you see the Light of Jesus in the right light now. I’ll be looking for you on my next post. Bye for now!
