No Room for Both: Jesus Fills, Addiction Flees

“And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.’”
2 Corinthians 6:16

If I were sitting with you right now, I’d look you in the eye and remind you: You weren’t made to be a house divided. Either Jesus lives in you, or something else does. There’s no middle ground.

The world will tell you addiction is something you have to manage forever. That you’ll always have it inside you. But that’s not what the Word of God says. If you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you cannot remain filled with the unclean. Light and darkness cannot share the same room. The Holy and the profane cannot live in the same temple – your body.

Addiction is a thief. It wants to inhabit your thoughts, your body, your emotions, and your soul. But when Jesus takes up residence, He doesn’t rent space — He takes ownership. And when the Owner moves in, the squatters (addiction) have to move out.

This is why our recovery center doesn’t just offer temporary relief — it walks you into eternal transformation. Not because of us — but because we give Jesus the full house. His Word fills you. His Spirit leads you. His presence purifies you. And the addiction? It starves. It dries up. It dies.

Romans 6:6–7 – “Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.”

When you came to Christ, the old you died. Addiction is part of that old you. It can’t thrive in a life that’s been crucified and raised again in Christ.

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 – “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

Your body is God’s real estate now. That means you don’t just get free — you stay free by keeping the doors locked to anything unholy.

John 8:36 – “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Jesus doesn’t give partial freedom. He doesn’t do short-term fixes. When He sets you free, it’s full. It’s permanent. It’s eternal.

Introspective Questions:

  1. Do I truly believe that Jesus wants to fully dwell in me — not just visit?
  2. What am I still allowing space for in my life that contradicts the Holy Spirit’s presence?
  3. Am I feeding addiction or starving it with my true faith in Jesus… by the way I think, speak, or live?
  4. Have I surrendered not just the addiction, but the desire to manage it myself?
  5. What would change if I really saw myself as the temple of God?

Goal for Today:

Ask the Holy Spirit to fill every part of you — your thoughts, your body, your cravings, your time, your plans. Then go through the rooms of your life — your music, your phone, your habits, or your thoughts — and clean out anything that doesn’t agree with His holiness.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You paid the full price for my freedom, not partial healing. Fill me completely. Dwell in me fully. I want no room left for addiction, lies, shame, or defeat. Let Your Word wash me. Let Your Spirit renew me. Let my body, mind, and soul reflect that I am Your temple. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.

Scriptures for Meditation (NKJV):

  • Galatians 5:16“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
  • Colossians 3:3–4 – “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
  • Ephesians 5:18 – “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.”
