Overcoming Fear of Relapse through Jesus Christ

In your journey of faith-based addiction recovery, it’s natural to face fears and uncertainties, especially the fear of relapse. However, the Scriptures offer us profound assurance and guidance in these times, reminding us that in Jesus Christ, there is healing and power for a lifetime.
In the words of Jesus Himself, we find a potent command and promise, “But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, ‘Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.'” (Luke 8:50). This declaration is not just for the physical ailments but extends to every form of bondage, including addiction. Jesus calls us to replace our fear with faith, holding onto the belief that wholeness and recovery are not only possible but promised.
The journey of recovery is often laden with trials and temptations. Yet, the Lord teaches us to pray, “And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (Matthew 6:13). This prayer is a daily reminder that we are not walking this path alone. God’s kingdom, power, and glory are our support, providing strength to overcome every temptation and fear of relapse.
Apostle Paul, understanding the challenges of faith and obedience, encourages us when he said, “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;” (Philippians 2:12). This isn’t a call to live in a state of anxiety, but rather an invitation to recognize the seriousness of our commitment to recovery and the respect it demands for the transformative power of God at work within us.
The journey may involve suffering and trials, as Revelation 2:10 suggests, “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” This passage reassures us that our trials, including the fear of relapse, are not in vain. They are seen by God, and faithfulness through them will be rewarded.
James 4:7 offers a strategy for those moments when temptation feels overwhelming, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” In submission to God, there is power to resist every temptation, including the pull of past addictions. It’s in this posture of submission and resistance that we find freedom from the snares of the devil . . . “and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.” (2 Timothy 2:26).
Lastly, be encouraged by the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:23, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” God’s intention and action toward us are pure and powerful. He is involved in our complete sanctification—spirit, soul, and body. In Him, we find the strength to remain blameless, overcoming every fear of falling back into old patterns.
As you continue on your path of recovery, remember that in Jesus, there is complete healing and victory over addiction. Fear not, for your recovery, sanctified and supported by Jesus, is for a lifetime. Keep your faith steadfast in Him, and let His words guide you through every moment of fear and temptation. Jesus heals completely, and in Him, your recovery is sealed.
