When Parents Fail, Jesus Remains

You Are Not Abandoned

“Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.”
Psalm 27:10

Let’s get real today in a short study about parents. Some of you never heard “I love you” from a parent. Some heard it but never felt it. Others were left to survive emotional neglect, abuse, or even outright abandonment. You may still carry wounds from words that were spoken , or the silence that followed when you cried for help and no one came.

This is real pain. And Jesus doesn’t dismiss it. He absolutely enters into it with you.

Jesus was abandoned by friends, rejected by His own people, and misunderstood by family. He knows what it’s like to stand alone. But He never left His mission… and He will never leave you.

God does not parent like people do. He does not withdraw when you’re broken, tired, or struggling. In fact, He moves toward you all the time. Every day, in every moment you feel unworthy… He moves closer.

The love of Jesus doesn’t hinge on your performance. It’s grounded in His character. And the cross proves this: even when everyone else walks away, Jesus stays.

Read one of the verses below and meditate on them each day

  • Psalm 68:5-6“A father to the fatherless… God sets the lonely in families.”
  • Isaiah 49:15-16 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast?… I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.”
  • John 14:18“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
  • Romans 8:15“You received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry ‘Abba, Father.’”
  • Hebrews 13:5“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

As yourself the following and write your answers in your journal

  1. What messages did your parents (intentionally or not) send you about your worth?
  2. How have those messages shaped how you view God today?
  3. When you think about God as your Father, what emotions or resistance come up?
  4. What would it mean for you to receive God’s love as your perfect, unchanging parent?
  5. What are practical ways you can begin to trust God to re-parent your wounded heart?

For your journal

Write a letter to God expressing how your parents’ actions (or inactions) have affected you. Be honest. Then, ask Him to show you how He sees you… not through the lens of your upbringing, but through the truth of His Word. Then, close your letter with the words below:

“I release the right to be parented perfectly by You, My Abba Father, and receive Your Perfect love, from now and forever. Help me to forgive my earthly parents.

Prayer

Abba Father ,
I’ve been hurt by the people who should have loved me the most. Some days, I still carry those wounds like chains. But I believe what You say: that even if my father or mother abandons me, You will receive me.I come to You as I am… with grief, anger, confusion, and longing, and ask You to heal what others broke. Re-parent my heart. Teach me how to trust again. Help me to know You as my safe place, my unchanging Father, and the One who will never leave. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Have a blessed rest of your day by knowing the One who loves you the most!
