When Unresolved Trauma Seems Like an Immovable Obstacle on your Road to Addiction Freedom

Recovery is often painted as a journey of freedom, but for many, it also comes with the heavy weight of unresolved emotional trauma. The memories of past hurts, failures, or losses can be overwhelming, leaving you feeling stuck even as you work to move forward. As Christians, we have the hope and guidance of Christ to navigate these deep emotional struggles. Let’s explore how to face these challenges with faith and courage.

  1. Acknowledge the Pain

Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Pretending the pain isn’t there won’t help—it’s okay to admit that you’re struggling. Acknowledging your trauma is the first step toward healing. Speak to God openly in prayer about what hurts. He is ready to listen and comfort.

  1. Seek God’s Healing

Emotional trauma often leaves wounds that only God can fully heal. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus invites us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Spend time in His Word, reflecting on His promises. Consider journaling your prayers or the Scriptures that speak to your heart as a way to pour out your emotions and cling to His truth.

  1. Lean on Your Coach & Community

Isolation can magnify your pain. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us of the importance of companionship: “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” Surround yourself with a trusted support system—whether it’s a pastor, coach, counselor, support group, or close Christian friends. Share your struggles and allow them to walk alongside you.

  1. Forgive Yourself and Others

Unforgiveness, whether directed at others or yourself, can keep you trapped in your trauma. Ephesians 4:31-32 encourages us to “Get rid of all bitterness… forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Forgiveness is not about excusing wrongs but about freeing yourself from the chains of resentment. Ask God for strength to forgive, trusting Him to bring justice and restoration.

  1. Focus on Daily Grace

Trauma can make the road ahead seem insurmountable, but God gives us grace for each day. Lamentations 3:22-23 declares, “His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.” Instead of dwelling on the entirety of your pain, take each day as it comes, relying on God’s fresh strength and mercy.

  1. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

Recovery and healing from trauma are not linear processes. There will be ups and downs, but every step forward, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. Philippians 1:6 reminds us, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Trust that God is faithfully working in you, even when the progress feels slow.

  1. Cling to Eternal Hope

In moments when the pain feels unbearable, shift your focus to the eternal hope we have in Christ. Revelation 21:4 gives us a beautiful promise: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” This assurance doesn’t negate your present struggles but reminds you that they are temporary compared to the glory that awaits each and every one of us who believe.

Struggling with emotional trauma during recovery doesn’t mean you’re failing; it means you’re human. Remember that healing is a process, and Almighty God is with you every step of the way. As you face your pain, lean into His presence and allow Him to guide you toward freedom, moment by moment heartbeat by heartbeat. Lean on Jesus, the lover of your soul.

Have a blessed rest of your day. There’s healing in His wings! See you next post!
