Why Are You Here?

Have you ever found yourself staring into the abyss of that question, Why am I here? You felt the weight of this question press down harder than ever? Maybe it crept in during the darkest nights of addiction, when every choice seemed to spiral into chaos, or maybe it lingers now, in the fragile hope of recovery, as you piece yourself back together. We’ve all been there, wondering if our lives were just a string of mistakes with no meaning. Personally, When I was involved with leading a group with my husband, I went around the table asking each person, “why are you here?” Everyone took time to think about it and reply as though they had never thought about it. There was this one man with a response that shocked me. He said, “I’m only here because my mother was raped; I was never meant to be born”. That became an extremely important teaching moment that helped him understand more from a Biblical standpoint.

Here’s the truth that changes everything… and I pray it changes you as well: You are not an accident. You’re here because God placed you here, with a purpose so deep and intentional that even your struggles can’t erase it. The Bible declares in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” That’s not a vague promise… it’s a lifeline, especially when you’re clawing your way out of the pit.

In the haze and insanity of addiction, purpose feels like a cruel joke. You might’ve told yourself you were too broken, too far gone, that your existence was a burden rather than a gift. I get it! Most everyone have felt that lie wrap around them like chains. But God and faith flip the script. Ephesians 2:10 says we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Think about that: before you took your first breath, before the first stumble, God saw you and said, This one’s Mine, and I’ve got a plan. Your recovery isn’t just about getting clean… Jesus is using this time as a stepping stone leading to His purpose for your precious life. Every tear, every battle, every moment you battle to stay alive, all work together for His purpose. It’s raw material for a redemption story that can shake the heavens. Jesus didn’t shy away from the lost or the hurting… He ran to them. Your pain doesn’t disqualify you; it qualifies you to carry His light into places and people others can’t reach.

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

So why are you here, right now, reading this? It’s because you matter and today matters. This is your breakthrough! Purpose isn’t some distant prize you earn after years of perfection. Purpose is alive in the everyday grit of life and your recovery. It’s in the courage to pray when you’d rather give up, the strength to forgive yourself when shame whispers you don’t deserve it, the choice to reach out to someone else who’s drowning where you once were. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made”. That’s you, flaws and all. You’re here to reflect God’s love, to heal through His grace, to prove that no darkness is too deep for His light to pierce. Your story, even the chapters you’d rather erase, is being woven into something beautiful. I’m convinced of it because I’ve seen it in my own life, and I believe it for yours.

Here’s the bottom line: you’re here because you’re loved beyond measure, chosen with intention, and called to His purpose that’s unfolding one breath at a time. Recovery isn’t the endgame… it’s the launchpad. God’s not done with you; He’s just getting started. So when that question, Why am I here?, creeps in again, answer it with this: I’m here because God says He created me for a purpose, and He’s making me a new creation in Christ. Hold tight to that truth. Let it carry you through today, tomorrow, and every moment ahead. You’re not just surviving, you’re stepping into the purpose for which you were made by Almighty God

.Psalm 139 (NKJV) is below. OWN IT!

O Lord, You have searched me and known me.
You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You understand my thought afar off.
You comprehend my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word on my tongue,
But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.
You have hedged me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.

Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You.

Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God!
Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men.
For they speak against You wickedly;
Your enemies take Your name in vain.
Do I not hate them, O Lord, who hate You?
And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?
I hate them with perfect hatred;
I count them my enemies.

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.

Have a blessed rest of your day, knowing that you are here for a reason and for His purpose. Now, go walk into that!
