Why We Should Never Envy the Wicked: A Biblical Perspective for Recovery

In a world where wickedness often seems to prosper, it’s easy to fall into the trap of envying those who live without any regard for God’s ways… especially when their lives appear comfortable or successful. Yet, Scripture repeatedly warns us against this mindset, offering a perspective rooted in trust and eternal hope. Proverbs 24:1-2 says, “Do not envy the wicked, nor desire to be with them; for their heart devises violence, and their lips talk of troublemaking.” This reminds us that beneath the surface, evil carries a destructive weight… something no one in recovery should ever long for. The temporary gains of the wicked are fleeting, and their path leads to ruin, not the peace we seek and find in Jesus Christ.
When we’re rebuilding our lives, envying evil people can pull us back into old patterns, tempting us to chase what looks appealing but ultimately enslaves. Psalm 37:1-2 urges us, “Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.” God assures us their worldly success is short-lived, like grass that fades under the sun. Instead of fixating on their apparent wins, we’re called to focus on what lasts, which is God’s righteousness, His freedom, and an eternity that is so beautiful and perfect that our minds cannot even imagine. Recovery isn’t about mimicking the world’s shortcuts; it’s about trusting God for our purpose and freedom, even when it feels slow.
The truth is, envying evil people distorts our view of what’s good. Proverbs 23:17-18 instructs, “Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day; for surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off.” This is a lifeline for anyone in recovery: our hope isn’t tied to what we see now, but to the eternal reward God promises. Evil people may flaunt their trophies, but they’re hollow compared to the wholeness we find in Jesus. Once they die, that face Hell for all eternity where there is no escape any longer. So, let’s reject and bury envy, fix our eyes on Jesus, and walk the path of freedom and healing, knowing the wicked have no part in the joy that awaits us.
Have a blessed rest of your day as you choose to measure yourself by the Lord’s standards… not the world’s. Their expensive ‘toys’ are temporary in this world… our freedom and peace is for now and forever. Hope to see you in my next post.
