A Short Memo on a Dangerous Obstacle to Your Recovery

In a world that is becoming increasingly tolerant of recreational drug use, many overlook the silent devastation that substances like cannabis can wreak on the soul, mind, and body. I hear, time and time again, “weed is find… it’s not even a ‘drug’… it’s healing and comforting”. Despite claims that marijuana is “harmless” or even “medicinal,” growing research and hospital emergency room visits reveal a darker truth. Regular cannabis use is strongly linked to increased risks of depression, suicidal thoughts, and even suicide attempts. But the consequences extend beyond mental health—marijuana also targets the heart.

While the brain is the number one target for THC, the heart is right there as well. High-potency THC is associated with heart attack, stroke, and irregular heart rhythms. Many people assume cannabis only affects cognitive function, yet studies increasingly show its impact on cardiovascular health can be dangerous, even life-threatening. The Bible warns against anything that clouds judgment or leads one away from wisdom: “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Though this verse speaks of alcohol, the principle applies to any substance that dulls awareness, weakens self-control, and harms the body—especially the heart.

For those recovering from addiction, embracing Biblical principles offers the only true path to healing. Scripture calls us to renew our minds, not to escape through substances that deepen our suffering: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Healing requires surrender—surrendering toxic habits, destructive thoughts, and false comforts in exchange for God’s restoring POWER.

The tragic reality is that many people turn to cannabis, believing it will ease their pain… their anxiety… their feelings of despair… only to find themselves trapped in a cycle of worsening mental and physical health. Depression, suicidal ideation, cardiovascular complications, and hopelessness flourish when we seek relief outside of God. True freedom… lasting peace and restoration… can only come from Jesus. As Christ Himself said, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

For those struggling with addiction recovery, using THC and thinking it’s ok, could be your problem. The choice is in your hands… will you seek escape through substances that destroy, or will you pursue healing through Christ, who restores and heals for a lifetime? The answer determines not just physical and emotional well-being but the strength of your spiritual walk. If cannabis use has been a stumbling block, now is the time to detox and turn to the One who offers true deliverance. In Him, there is hope. In Jesus, there is a new free life here on earth and then eternal life once you take your last breath here.

Have a blessed rest of your day! I hope you think about this and do your own research.
